Spotsylvania High School’s varsity basketball player Bria Carter is confident and if you had the privilege to watch her play you would understand why. After being placed on varsity her freshman year, Bria has led her team in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks since. Not to mention she can play any position necessary for a win and will take on anyone in her way to accomplish just that. If her and her fellow Knights keep this up a shot at the playoffs are very likely this upcoming season.

Offthemag: When and how did you develop your love for the game?
Bria Carter: I’ve been playing ball for as long as I can remember, probably since I was like 8 or 9 years old. It honestly came easier than the other sports I had been playing around the same age. So as I became better I slowly just fell in love with it.

Offthemag: You have two brothers who both played basketball in high school; did they have any influence on your game?
Bria Carter: Yeah, definitely! The way they ran the court and made plays made me want to work as hard and be just like them. So watching them of course made me want to always get better at what I do.

Offthemag: How would you describe your game?
Bria Carter: Hmm…I would say that I love one on one’s because I know that whoever is in front of me doesn’t want it [Giggling]. I can take anyone off the dribble and make it to the hole. And I love fighting to get position, and out jumping my opponent when I’m going for the rebound.

Offthemag: What separates your game from others?
Bria Carter: Some people look JUST to score, or look JUST to rebound or whatever but I feel I’m an overall player that does what you need. If my team needs boards I’ll get them or points I’ll get them and I LOVE playing defense.

Offthemag: Who’s your favorite athlete? Why?
Bria Carter: Well I have two, Derrick Rose and Kobe Bryant. I like Rose because of his athleticism and his ability as a guard to body people and get to the basket, but what I love MOST about him is his fearlessness and confidence! I love Kobe on the other hand because he knows how to lead and take care of business. He can back up any trash talking he does and do it effortlessly. He’ll give you 200% every time he’s on the court.

Offthemag: Who do you look up to as a role model in your everyday life?
Bria Carter: My grandma! :) I love her so much!! She is the strongest woman I know and so unselfish. When I get to be her age, God willing, I want to be just like her! Plus she’s gorgeous!! She looks nothing like her age that’s how I’m trying to be in the future. [Smiling]

Offthemag: Black and Orange or Red, White, and Blue?
Bria Carter: [Laughing] Either or! It’s not about the colors or the school’s name. It’s what you make out of it, establishing your name there, and how you grow from the good and bad.

Offthemag: What can you and your teammates do to get over the hump and get into the post season?
Bria Carter: Well right now I feel that everyone sees us as the underdogs so we definitely have to work harder than our previous years just to prove them wrong, then we got to go take these scrimmages seriously so we can get a feel for each other and know exactly what we’re working with then come back and work on our weaknesses and become a stronger team. Just have to take it one game at a time and be confident.

Offthemag: If you could play for any school in college, who would it be?
Bria Carter: Hmm…That’s a tough question. To be honest I don’t really have one specific college in mind at this moment. I’m just enjoying this experience and the attention I’m getting right now and working hard to keep all of that. But if I did have to choose, not based on basketball, I would pick Georgia State, only because their colors are beautiful! [Laughing]

Offthemag: What’s one word to describe you?
Bria Carter: HUMBLE…very humble.

Offthemag: Okay, there is 10 seconds on the clock and you’re down by 1. You taking the shot or dishing it off?
Bria Carter: I’m taking the shot! … Or driving it in. [Big smile]
